*** rant begins ***

It sometimes bothers me that ships in popular art and entertainment (especially pirate ships) tend to be square rigged, even though this was historically not always the case. Over the last few hundred years most vessels, including pirate ships, in Europe and the Americas and elsewhere, were fully fore-and-aft rigged, or some combination of square rigging and fore-and-aft rigging (e.g. barquentine, brigantine, brig, schooner, dhow). This seems especially silly to me because fore-and-aft rigging is apparently better for speed and, from an artist's perspective, looks so much more elegant. Google "gaff rig" and tell me that these kind of ships aren't much prettier than the boring pirate ships we've all grown up with..?! They should be the mainstay of paintings and movies, not the exception!
